An unwelcome unsavory surprise awaited a dad, who had bought a Christmas Wreath decoration to adorn

An unwelcome unsavory surprise awaited a dad, who had bought a Christmas Wreath decoration to adorn his front door. He discovered a dead snake in it.  The dad, Karl Gaskell, 43, had decided alongside his wife Nicki, 40, on purchasing the twelve dollar wreath decoration but was not ready for the “less than aromatic” fragrance from the decoration. Gaskell, who lives in Castletown on the Isle of Man, says he was spurred on to investigate the stench from the wreath. His investigations revealed protruding coarse scales jutting out of the backside of the wreath, which was made up of bound straw.  Karl, who is an industrial chemist, pulled out of the straw base, the body of a dead decomposing snake. Upon making the discovery, he was concerned whether the snake had been venomous or not because he believed that some snakes remain deadly poisonous even after their death. So, Karl contacted The Natural History Museum.  The Natural History Museum, on December 12th, replied to Karl’s query.  They said that based on the photos provided, the snake was most likely a grass snake, Natrix natrix, though others do also tend to label it as a British grass snake Natrix Helvetica.  The museu...

As Carrie Meadows reports, the Next-Generation Luminaires Solid-State Lighting Design competition continues to follow trending technologies

As Carrie Meadows reports, the Next-Generation Luminaires Solid-State Lighting Design competition continues to follow trending technologies and applications; thus this year the judges were also tasked with evaluating two new product categories – connected lighting for indoor use and sports lighting for outdoor use. During the LightFair International (LFI) conference and exhibition in San Diego, CA (April 26-28), the winners among the commercial lighting products submitted for the US Department of Energy’s annual Next Generation Luminaires (NGL) Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Design competition were announced. Following last year’s model, the organizers combined the Indoor and Outdoor luminaire announcements, and the judges have recognized 25 out of 93 submissions, with only five of those luminaires taking home Outstanding honors. As CARRIE MEADOWS reports, NGL continues to follow trending technologies and applications; thus this year the judges were also tasked with evaluating two new product categories – connected lighting for indoor use and sports lighting for outdoor use – and designated five products in total as “Notable.” The panel of 1...

6 billion by 2025, driven by the growing need to slake the thirst of a growing world population. World population is poised to grow from 7.8 billion in 2019 to over 9.8 billion by 2050. In line with this growth, there will be a parallel increase in demand for safe drinking water. Per capita consumption of drinking water in the coming years is poised to increase with science based evidence highlighting waters role in health and wellness. Few of the reasons why water is important to human health include its vital role in flushing out waste from the body; regulating body temperature; maintaining brain function; producing saliva; protecting tissues and joints; aids in nutrient absorption and digestion; improves blood oxygen circulation; boosts energy; optimizes cognitive function; helps retain youthful and supple skin. Scientific studies have also shown waters effectiveness in treating medical conditions such as constipation, kidney stones, exercise-induced asthma, urinary tract infection, and hypertension, among others. Against the backdrop of compelling evidence of the benefits of proper hydration, per capita consumption of water is expected to increase between 5 liters to 8 liter...

Life After Coal: Moving On From The Navajo Generating Station

The Salt River Project announced it would close the Navajo Generating Station two years ago. That started a domino effect on the Navajo Nation. In November, the Kayenta Mine and the coal fired power plant closed, and hundreds of jobs were lost. Now new sources of energy are beginning to sprout in Kayenta. Hudgins is so far off the grid, surrounded by towering red rock walls, that she doesn’t have running water. But she does have access to something that many Navajo Nation residents are still waiting for — electricity. “It’s great to have instead of going down and get the kerosene and all that for the lights. So all I do is switch — the light comes on,” Hudgins said. In her front yard next to the chicken coop, Hudgins has her own solar panel. It keeps her lights on and occasionally, her coffee maker. But coal production has halted, forcing residents to stockpile their coal. Hudgins keeps hers hidden in a camper shell — covered with a tarp, wire, and a big rock. The Black Mesa and Lake Powell railroad train used to connect the Kayenta Mine and the Navajo Generating Station. It still weaves over the highway into Kayenta, but its conveyer belts are silent. The train hauled it...

Honeywell, Denso to develop UAM electric propulsion

Will collaborate on hybrid-electric and fully electric powertrains for urban air mobility (UAM) markets. Honeywell and Denso are collaborating to propel the future of urban air mobility and other aerospace market segments by combining their expertise to develop hybrid-electric and fully electric powertrains. By leveraging their deep experience in the aerospace and automotive sectors, Honeywell and Denso seek to make future aircraft cleaner, quieter, more fuel-efficient, and easier to maintain. The two companies will work together to build concepts and technology demonstrations for the design and development of hybrid-electric and all-electric propulsion systems for aerospace applications. Urban air mobility (UAM) is comprised of air vehicles, such as air taxis, with on-demand availability, and is aimed at providing more efficient movement for people within cities to improve safety and decrease ground traffic. Major advancements in materials, generators, and motors are making electric-powered flight possible, practical, and affordable. “The pressure to mitigate the environmental and economic impact of aviation will only grow in the years ahead as air passenger traffic increases a...

Early adopters of LED lighting will remember 50,000 hour or even 100,000 hour lifetime ratings printed on

Early adopters of LED lighting will remember 50,000 hour or even 100,000 hour lifetime ratings printed on the box. But during a recent trip to the hardware store the longest advertised lifetime I found was 25,000 hours. Others claimed only 7,500 or 15,000 hours. And yes, these are brand-name bulbs from Cree and GE. So, what happened to those 100,000 hour residential LED bulbs? Were the initial estimates just over-optimistic? Was it all marketing hype? Or, did we not know enough about LED aging to predict the true useful life of a bulb? I put these questions to the test. Join me after the break for some background on the light bulb cartel from the days of incandescent bulbs (not a joke, a cartel controlled the life of your bulbs), and for the destruction of some modern LED bulbs to see why the lifetimes are clocking in a lot lower than the original wave of LED replacements. Any discussion of light bulb lifetime would be incomplete without mention of the Phoebus cartel, an international organization formed in 1924 by the world’s leading light bulb manufacturers to manipulate the bulb market. As discussed by Markus Krajewski in “The Great Lightbulb Conspiracy”, the cartel assigned ...

What does a guy do when he dreams of cakes all the time but can’t bake

What does a guy do when he dreams of cakes all the time but can’t bake to save his life? If he is lucky, he marries one of the best bakers in the world — I did. It worked out well for me. Of course, it’s not the only reason I fell in love with Sarit but knowing that she can walk into the kitchen, rummage around the cupboards and conjure an amazing cake without even looking at a recipe — I admit I find that quite sexy. We met in a kitchen — where else do chefs meet? — and food has been a big thing in our relationship from the start: cooking it, sharing it with each other, with friends, in restaurants, at home. I first proposed to Sarit at a little breakfast joint in Jaffa, Tel Aviv — runny eggs in red-hot sauce, tahini and bread. She said no. I tried again: midnight sushi didn’t cut it, steak dinner — no again. Eventually, fresh seafood lunch by the beach and she agreed. When we opened our restaurant on London’s Warren Street, we never meant to bake much. We had a little bench we called the pastry section but, as it was just the two of us in the kitchen, it was a section in name only. It started small, just baking some bread to go with the mezze and a cake or two to sit on the ba...
