Unicorn Store review: Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson at their weirdest best

The stars of Captain Marvel team up for a second time in Netflix’s sweet but conventional film about growing up. Coming-of-age tales about lost dreamers may be well-trodden ground but Brie Larson’s directorial debut Unicorn Store has something that the rest do not: A reunion with fellow Captain Marvel alumnus Samuel L. Jackson. With Captain Marvel soaring in cinemas worldwide, fans of the duo may be tempted to dip in to this by-the-book tale. Unicorn Store had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival way back in 2017 but is about to gather a wider audience come its distribution on Netflix this Friday. And fans won’t be disappointed. Unicorn Store proves that Larson and Jackson should be a buddy duo in at least 20 more films, unicorn-related or not. Kit, played by Larson, is a 20-something art student who fails her degree by literally coloring outside the lines. She ends up back on her parents’ couch, chugging Coke and watching infomercials until dark. We learn from a trip down VHS recorder memory lane that Kit was a fairy child who grew up painting rainbows. Despite her subsequent hard times, glitter is still encrusted on the soles of present-day K...

All journeys have a beginning, middle and an end, and it’s the job of the ForgeRock Identity Platform to ensure that every authentication journey, from start to finish, remains safe for the client and easy for the user. The platform’s Intelligent Authentication feature delivers the unique ability to visually map user authentication journeys with a drag-and-drop interface and, post-implementation, use analytics to measure the user experience. This makes it possible to offer a more personalized and frictionless authentication experience across channels and digital touchpoints in a manner that caters to customer or employee needs. Meanwhile, the organizations implementing these journeys are able to consolidate multiple logins into a single, consistent and secure experience; audit all login events; and minimize the risk of DDoS attacks and breaches. One of the keys to Intelligent Authentication’s effectiveness is the use of “authentication trees” that allow for multiple paths and decision points throughout a journey. These trees are composed of various nodes that define actions taken during authentication and can be combined to create unique user experiences. A recent ForgeRock case...

Electric scooters draw angry reaction of taxi drivers

The taxi drivers in Istanbul, who forced the banning of ride-share application Uber, now target Martı, a Turkish rental scooter application. Some taxi drivers claim on the social media that the electric scooters are extremely dangerous and occupy the roads, while others complain that the owners of Martı application do not make a similar payment while the cab owners paid license fees. “Our target is to spread the sharing economy to every segment of society. The company currently employs 450 people and our goal is to create an environmentally friendly and sustainable system in transportation,” it said. Meanwhile, after an 18-year-old high school student who was using an electric scooter died in a traffic accident in Istanbul on Feb. 25, the discussions that sparked on social media reached the Turkish Parliament. Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) lawmaker Gürsel Tekin submitted a written questionnaire, asking the Interior Ministry if the system is inspected and the measures are taken to ensure the riders’ safety. Ab Core Trainer Mohammad Zubair was on his way home from a local mosque in northeast New Delhi when he came across a large crowd. He turned towards an underp...

The Winners of Our Fifth Annual Review Contest for High Schoolers

Of a record 2,300 entries, we selected nine winners, eight runners-up and 18 honorable mentions. Read the winning essays here. These are just a few of the pieces of art and culture students chose to write about for our Fifth Annual Student Review Contest, in which we invited them to review anything they wanted as long as it fit into one of the categories of creative work reviewed by The Times. This year, we divided this popular contest into two categories — one for high school and one for middle school. More than 2,300 young people entered our high school category, which was open for students ages 13-19. They wrote about everything from local restaurants and art exhibits to comedy shows and hidden architectural gems. Of the many excellent entries we received, our judges selected nine winners, eight runners-up and 18 honorable mentions. You’ll find the nine winning essays, published in full, below. Scroll to the bottom of this post to see the names of all the finalists. One thing we noticed about this year’s entries? Students seem to have mastered the art of the pan. While we often get many complimentary reviews, in this batch of winners you’ll find just as many glowing reviews a...

Mexico City’s first non-chain, genuine designer-style business hotel, Habita provided a template for the future when

Mexico City’s first non-chain, genuine designer-style business hotel, Habita provided a template for the future when it first opened in 2000. The shimmering white building still looks cool and contemporary, and the high level of service attracts repeat business as well as leisure travellers. The Polanco neighbourhood is undeniably posh. Some of Mexico City’s wealthiest residents dwell hereabouts, and many embassies are nearby. Avenida Masaryk is the main drag, with plenty of boutiques and eating places and several of Mexico City’s best museums within walking distance . Downtown is 20-30 minutes by car. The airport is a bit less. Wrapped in a glass skin that completely reconfigures the original Fifties building, and which glows after dark, Habita is an impressive architectural landmark. Inside is also sleek, with white dominating most spaces and original features stylishly contained within contemporary lines. Contemporary art, floor-to-ceiling windows and modernist Artemide and Flos lamps generate an arty, meditative ambience. Reception and room service are brisk; the staff is very used to business travellers. The pool and deck on the fifth floor make for a cool meeting space. Th...

Wireless networks may be convenient, but wired networks beat Wi-Fi in every other way. Wired networks

Wireless networks may be convenient, but wired networks beat Wi-Fi in every other way. Wired networks are faster, they’re always reliable, and they’re secure. Unless you’re sitting on the couch with a laptop, or connecting a Wi-Fi-only device, such as an iPad, wired ethernet is the better way to go. But what should you do about the tangle of wires? Homeowners can run cables inside the walls, potentially increasing the value of their house for tech-savvy buyers. I’m making a few home upgrades and began wiring it up for ethernet even before it had a working bathroom. (I have my priorities.) Here’s how you can do the same in your house. The author, suited up for crawling under the house to make friends with small spiders and to wire a jack on the opposite side of the living room. Before you start laying cable, take time to figure out a few things. Where do you need ethernet jacks? Where will your central networking hardware sit? What are your logistical limitations? (If you aren’t sure whether you need ethernet, read our “The Ultimate Guide to Home Networking” for tips on determining the right networking technology for you.) I wired et...

Programmable Mimic Go tracks your stuff, can be a handy bike tail-light too

Mimic Go might look like a bubbly, chubby-version of a tracking tag (which it is) but that’s only one of the tricks it has up its red, plastic sleeve. Not only can you track stuff around the world thanks to GPS, LTE-M & eSIM connectivity, but the Mimic Go can help prevent things from going missing in the first place. It can even alert you if someone approaches a room you’d like to keep secure. And light up your ride. San Francisco-based Smart Mimic has dabbled in this area before, in fact using pretty much the same enclosure design and color, but this iteration of its IoT (Internet of Things) technology – launched this week on Indiegogo – sets itself apart from other offerings with its customizable triggers – or “Skills” as the team from Smart Mimic calls them. You can use these Skills to set up a number of desired security scenarios, all powered by a smartphone-based (iOS/Android) app. You can also design your own Skills within the app and share these with the broader community of Mimic Go users. If you’ve ever used IFTTT (If This, Then That) or Zapier, then you’ll know how intuitive – and easy – this method of task-based, layperson̵...

Good design starts with a good idea, and being able to flesh that idea out with

Good design starts with a good idea, and being able to flesh that idea out with a model. In the electronics world, we would build a model on a breadboard before soldering everything together. In much the same way that the industrial designer [Eric Strebel] makes models of his creations before creating the final version. In his latest video, he demonstrates the use of a CO2 laser for model making. While this video could be considered a primer for using a laser cutter, watching some of the fine detail work that [Eric] employs is interesting in the way that watching any master craftsman is. He builds several cubes out of various materials, demonstrating the operation of the laser cutter and showing how best to assemble the “models”. [Eric] starts with acrylic before moving to wood, cardboard, and finally his preferred material: foam core. The final model has beveled edges and an interior cylinder, demonstrating many “tricks of the trade” of model building. Of course, you may wish to build models of more complex objects than cubes. If you have never had the opportunity to use a laser cutter, you will quickly realize how much simpler the design process is with high-quality tools like...

Runners and inline skaters can zip around U.S. Bank Stadium for Winter Warm-Ups

M/V Burns Harbor approached the Superior Entry Lighthouse as it moved towards the Duluth-Superior Harbor for winter layup in Superior, WI. Snow had fallen earlier in the day, and the temperature registered at 13 degrees. But I was jogging in cropped leggings and a T-shirt — not on a treadmill and not on a track so small I’d get dizzy or bored before I put in 3 miles. I was circling the upper concourse at U.S. Bank Stadium. Just one day earlier, the Vikes had powered through a game on the field below, beating the Detroit Lions. I feel that about every mile. But knowing I was clocking my distance in the home of professional athletes — guys with the kind of drive and grit I could never match — put a kick in my step. What really made me happy, though, was running free of the gear that usually comes with winter. No gloves, no facemask, no layers, no ice beneath my feet. When I arrived at the stadium, I took the elevator to Level 4 and stepped onto the concourse-turned-running course. When I asked, an usher told me that the bag check was back downstairs at the Legacy Gate. “Most of the runners just tuck their stuff into a seat,” she said. I did the same, taking in an unencumbered view...
