Watch Metallica’s Lars Ulrich Meet a Heavy Metal Fan With Autism

Ahead of Metallica’s second annual day of service backed by the band’s charitable arm All Within My Hands, a touching clip of drummer Lars Ulrich spending time backstage with a fan with autism, Tom, has appeared online. It’s taken from the 2012 documentary Mission to Lars, a film that tracks heavy metal diehard Tom Spicer’s journey to meet his favorite drummer. Spicer has Fragile X syndrome, a sort of autism or learning disability loosely defined as a genetic condition that causes a range of developmental problems. The video excerpt, captured during the band’s arena tour following Death Magnetic, shows the Metallica fan’s wishes come true as he’s immersed in the musician’s world, rubbing elbows with other players such as Kerry King. “See that guy, he plays in a band called Slayer,” Ulrich directs Spicer’s attention to the guitarist at one point in the short section of the film. “This is Tom, he came all the way from England to see Metallica.” Below, watch the Mission to Lars clip that was recently re-shared on YouTube, the moving segment serving to remind all of us that music’s communicative powe...

While most of what we hear from SRAM involves singing the praises of wide range cassettes

While most of what we hear from SRAM involves singing the praises of wide range cassettes and 12 gears, there’s a group of riders for whom getting up hills is of no interest whatsoever. We speak of course of the Downhill scene. If George Thompson’s regular race reports are anything to go by, there are plenty of breakages, so perhaps justifying the purchase of one of these new XO1 DH products from SRAM will not be too difficult. No, there’s no DH Eagle 12 speed option (we should totally do that for next year’s April Fool though…), but the SRAM XO1 DH brings high end 7-speed shifting to the party. Mated with the recent DUB bottom bracket for SRAM’s claimed longer lasting seals and light weight, the XO1 promises improved chain retention and an abrasion guard on the crank arm to keep things looking good. Which will be important, because if you’re riding these you’re probably eying up the podium, and you want you and your bike to look their best for all those photos, right? For the back end of the bike, there’s a new XG-795 Mini Block Cassette, which promises optimised gear steps of 10-24 with two-tooth steps so there’s no need for double or triple shifts. It’s compatible with any XD...

How Tough Mudder comes up with its evil obstacles Telegraph logo Feed of articles Saved articles Save Facebook icon Twitter icon Instagram icon LinkedIn icon Facebook icon Twitter icon Instagram icon LinkedIn icon

If, like me, you’ve struggled around a Tough Mudder course, you’ve probably wondered who would create such evil and torturous obstacles. I know I did, as my whole body was  dunked in ice cold water, then electrocuted, then made to crawl under barbed wire. What diabolical madman could come up with a slide that goes through fire? Or a tent full of nerve gas? The 31-year-old product manager is one of the brains behind Tough Mudder’s gruelling half-marathon obstacle courses. With a new raft of challenges announced for 2016, Nathan told The Telegraph about the nefarious tests that competitors can look forward to this year. “We are focusing on one called Block Ness Monster,” he said. This forces competitors to use teamwork to hoist each other over a series of rotating blocks in waist-deep water. The blocks are also on bungee cords, so if you’re standing on one and your team let go, you might get a bird’s eye view of the whole course. “An intern came up with an idea involving balancing boards across water, and if people behind you step on the board too, you could fall in. “But when we tested it, we found it was much more fun to climb over a block while it was in water, so ...
