At night, you can find her at the Black Forest Inn in Whittier, baking up dozens

At night, you can find her at the Black Forest Inn in Whittier, baking up dozens of delicious delights for Spyhouse Coffee locations throughout the metro. During the day, she’s currently developing the first brick-and-mortar location of the brand those pastries are made under: Black Walnut Bakery. Botcher, who grew up in the area and lives just a few blocks from her new storefront, has been working toward her own space for years. Her first kitchen experience came under renowned Southwest Minneapolis chef Steven Brown (“I was terrible,” Botcher said of the experience), for whom she worked as a line cook. But she loved watching the pastry chef. Eventually she ended up in culinary school in California, where she was certified as a pastry chef. Returning to Minneapolis, she became the opening pastry chef at Butcher & the Boar, where she was supported in developing her Black Walnut brand. In 2013, she started loading a cart with her baked goods and selling them on Nicollet Mall. That led to pop-up events and other opportunities before Spyhouse owner Christian Johnson called in 2015 and asked if she wanted to bake wholesale for his shops. At first, she said no, but eventually rele...

Do you notice frequent fly-aways that always pop up around the same spot? Or some strands that are shorter than the rest, where you didn’t ask for layers at your last trim? These are caused by repeated physical damage to the hair. “I have clients who will come in and I can see these little hairs, like right behind the ear, and I can instantly tell they wear their hair in a high ponytail—you can see those broken pieces because they wear it there every single day,” says hairstylist Levi Monarch. As we’ve talked about before, it could be that you haven’t changed your part—or it could be that your go-to workout hairstyle is breaking the strand midshaft. “The problem is that if you are working out, you likely want your hair held tight and secure—and this puts stress on your hair, which causes breakage in those areas,” says Monarch. “The first thing you can do is, when you are not working out, to wear your hair down or at least in a looser style so it’s not pulling as much and all the time.” Then, when you are working out, here are few better-for-you tips to ease damage. Don’t worry: We’re not going to suggest tha...

Registered in England and Wales. Number 8860726. When it comes to reducing the size and increasing the efficiency of power components, products introduced at this year’s Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) last week demonstrate that there are many ways to skin the cat. Here’s a look at some new product introductions.  Power Integrations, known for its energy-efficient power conversion products, announced its latest chipset for TV and monitor display power supplies. Under pressure to meet the new Energy Star specification taking effect in July of this year, manufacturers are looking for solutions and this chipset, which Power Integrations says boosts overall power efficiency, may fill the bill. It replaces the ACDC and DCDC converters with a single-stage, flyback technology. The component pairs the company’s InnoMux controller IC with an InnoSwitchTM3-MX isolated switcher IC to independently measure the load requirement of each of the outputs, which can include logic, audio or L...

PledgeCare: M’sian Company Producing Human-Grade Pet Food

Louis Tan has always had dogs in his life and grew in an era where scraps, chicken bones and a lot of rice were fed to the dogs. During his time in the US, he discovered two things—(1) human food for dogs is incredibly unhealthy since the human digestive systems are significantly different and (2) dogs are allergic to certain kind of ingredients in pet food. He looked into the pet food industry and found the extremely low quality of foods that were being produced. “Any decent quality pet food had to be imported from the US, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK,” said Louis. “After you factor in the shipping, tax and distributor costs, you end up paying hundreds for what is actually worth tens of dollars.” Early last year, he had Philip Torring and Julius on board and established PledgeCare that makes better pet food locally and support local businesses and communities. They came from different industries with no experience in the pet industry or manufacturing. “I want PledgeCare that enables pet owners to have a more active pet by solving its allergies and dietary problems,” he added. “I hope to educate pet owners about the extremely low-quality pet food and the impact it has on ...

Supreme Court rejects 2nd lien stripping in Chapter 7 bankruptcies | 2015-06-01

The Supreme Court of the United States held in a unanimous decision announced today that a debtor in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy proceeding may not void a junior mortgage lien when the debt owed on a senior mortgage lien exceeds the current value of the collateral if the creditor’s claim is both secured by a lien and allowed under the bankruptcy code. The ruling, which will benefit commercial lenders, says that bankruptcy courts may not “strip off” junior liens on property if the value of the property used as collateral is less than the amount the debtor owes to the senior lienholder — in other words, the junior mortgage lien is “completely underwater.” In the case of Bank of America v. Caulkett, Bank of America asserted that junior liens should not be treated as unsecured loans, because the bankruptcy code only “strips off” claims from property that are disallowed and because the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dewsnup v. Timm, disallowing “stripping down” of primary liens to the value of the underlying property, should extend to this case. The defendants argued that second liens should be treated as unsecured, and hence disallowed. The Court’s unanimous ruling impacts the right of junior...

Making a rooftop “cool” can be as easy as painting on a coat of white paint to reflect light and heat instead of absorbing it into a building. Using improved reflective roof coatings instead of conventional roofing materials when replacing or resurfacing a roof can reduce air conditioning costs and greatly minimize energy use. If starting from scratch and constructing a building from the ground up, installing a cool roof is a great first step; in most circumstances, there are no additional costs than those of a traditional roof.  “‘Cool roofs’ are one of the quickest and lowest cost ways we can reduce our global carbon emissions and begin the hard work of slowing climate change,” says former United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu. Having a cool roof not only enhances durability but also reduces cooling load buildup and the...

There are countless brands, colors, materials, and sizes of buffing pads—which do you choose? In this guide, we’ll give you the information and tools you need to make an informed decision when it comes to purchasing buffing and finishing pads. Most buffing pads use a hook-and-loop design, which simply refers to how the pad attaches to the backing plate of your buffer. You’ve probably seen the hook-and-loop style before if you’ve ever worked with Velcro—it’s the same concept. Hook-and-loop polishing pads are the most common you’ll see. Cutting pads are rougher and are intended to contact the surface of the paint and create friction/heat when used with cutting compounds. They may also be referred to as compounding pads, though polishing pads fall into this category as well. Typically made of coarser materials, cutting pads must be used in conjunction with polishing pads (and polish) to achieve a swirl-free, sparkling, like-new effect when doing some heavy cutting. Most cutting compounds come in all shapes and sizes, ...
